Ugh. Im at a loss. I have been working with a client on teaching her Yorkie a solid recall. We have tried everything I know; reinforcing for checking in, focus and impulse work, teaching a structured recall as well as rewarding with a trick (like Susan Garretts recallers method), reinforcing for following and staying close in the house. After our session tonight, I realized one thing: the dog has no desire to be with her handler. In a high distracting environment, she would look to me for reinforcement and not her owner. There is no relationship between the two. Anyone else run into this problem with clients? Anyone have any suggestions that I havent tried? Ive considered offering a board and train to make sure the homework is getting done, but Im almost certain its the lack of relationship between them.
