Ugh, okay. Heres the scary story guys (Yes, its written from a boys point of view). It was Saturday night, and like most teenage boys, I was playing video games, Call of Duty: Ghosts, to be specific. Most nights it wouldve only been me but since it wasnt a school night, my best friend James came over. This wasnt unusal, almost every week James would come over and we would test out the newest game I had downloaded. Tonight, after my mom had called out a quick Daniel, James, Im going to bed, we sat in my room, shut off from the outside, eating miscellaneous snacks and discussed the new features and new maps that we would test out, and of course wed place bets on who would do better, etc. The game finally finished downloading so we wiped off our Cheeto fingers and grabbed the controllers, beyond excited to play. We studied the main menu, and decided to first play a quick live game of Team Deathmatch. The maps set us in a nerdy awe and we praised the creators and talked about how one day, testing video games would one day us money. After about ten minutes, we had already heard enough of an annoying ten year old and a guy with a heavy accent and decided to switch the game settings so it was only us against each other. We picked the Stonehaven map and once again joked about how we would surely beat the other one by far. The game loaded and we looked into the first person screens and began hunting for each other. I rounded the corners of broken down castles and crossed bridges when I saw James character running across an opening. I took the opportunity quickly and shot him down, and then laughed when James punched me in the arm, being the sore loser that he is. After a few more turns of killing each other in various ways, there were two minutes left in the match and neither one of us could find each other, so we resorted to looking at each others screens to navigate ourselves to each other. Eventually, the same castle was in both of our sights, so we headed there. I was significantly closer, so I was sure to get to the building first, but when I ran through the opening and up the stairs, I saw a figure waiting for me. How the hell did you get there before me? I asked James, irritated. James looked at me with confusion then shook his head while turning back to the screen. Dude, I just got here, Im right behind- James sentence stopped suddenly and I knew he saw what I had when I came to building. We stared at the out-of-place character together, and figured it was probably a glitch in the game, but when the character suddenly moved and faced towards us, we became silent, like the breath was sucked out of us. What the hell? James said, leaning closer to the tv. The movement caused the characters name to appear: Foster. After a few seconds, we realized how stupid we were acting just because of a game and laughed for a bit at the unusual glitch, when Foster suddenly ran forward and stabbed James character, killing him and leaving my character alone with the intruder in the broken down castle. James stood up and yelled at the game while I started laughing, my voice slightly trembling. Aw screw you Foster, you killed my friend. I said, in a sarcastically sad tone. Suddenly, Foster turned towards my character and I saw for the first time that he didnt even have a helmet, or any sign of clothing that wouldve shown he could possibly be in this game, at least this mode. His whole face was scarred and it even looked like there was a stream of scarlet red running down from his forehead. Most disturbing of all though, was his sunken in head, looking like it was struck with such a heavy force that it became mishapen. The graphics were strangely detailed on this guy, and it was actually pretty creepy, I gave a silent props to the creators. No, screw you Daniel. Came clearly from the tv, in a deep, raspy voice. My laughing stopped and James had to slowly sit back down. Foster continued staring at my character, a low, disturbing laugh coming from the tv, when he quickly raised his gun. I cursed as I realized he was going to kill my character too, but just right then, the time ran out and the results were shown. I had won out of James and I, but neither of us could get excited or disappointed. We freaked out for a little bit, questioning what happened, but after a while convinced ourselves Foster was a mere glitch, and the talking back was just a new feature for the game bots. We went to bed with no more talk of the new game, James on the floor and I in my bed. Lucky for him, James went to bed quickly while I was stuck being wide awake. All I could think of was Foster, invading our game and talking back to me, I hadnt even had my headset plugged in. He had to be just a glitch, right? Thats all it could be. With that, I finally went to sleep. I woke up at 11:23 a.m. and yawned, tasting morning breath. I rolled over to wake up James when I let out a loud yell and jumped out of my bed. My mom ran in my room to see what I just discovered: James blanket was stained red where his stomach would be and he was alarmingly pale. My mom covered her mouth as she started weeping, then ran out to call 911. The ambulance had came quickly, and it turned out that it wasnt too late for James. My mom had drove us to the hospital and James parents arrived not too much later than us. Hours had passed, and after a lot of crying and praying, we were told that he would be fine, but theyd of course be keeping him here. James mom and dad and I had gone in to see him, and we were informed that it appeared that he was stabbed in his sleep. We all were a loss for words as we stared at James still body. Stabbed? I surely wouldve heard an intruder, surely wouldve witnessed my best friends stabbing! I sat in right by James with my fingers continuingly running through my hair, trying to understand everything. James dad patted my shoulder and told me in a tired voice that he and his wife would be going down to get coffee, and asked if I wanted anything. I smiled politely, but half-heartedly and shook my head no. They left the room, which left me and my unconscious friend alone together. I whispered a silent apology as tears started to form in my eyes again. The room was silent, except for the buzzing of various medical machines, when I heard footsteps in front of me. I looked up to smile at James parents when I was met with a scarred face, dripping with blood. The same man from the game with the sunken in head. He laughed in a maniacal way and raised his gun. Screw you Daniel.
