Uncertainty in the ruling party equals to the same for the country. Owing to the mounting tensions ahead of the forthcoming NRM Delegates Conference, this excerpt from the statement I delivered for my End of Year Address might be of importance. ...we have seen growing acrimonious struggle for power, turmoil and uncertainty within the ruling Party. It is a cause for worry as the division is said to extend even to the Army, Police and intelligence Agencies. The situation today in government is quite similar to what our country went through between 1964 and 1966, between 1969 and 1971 and between 1983 and 1985 all ending in violence and unconstitutional change of government. This is partly the reason we in the Opposition have been calling for constitutional and electoral reforms arrived at not only through Parliament but through national consultation, dialogue and consensus. We think this is a better route to take because we know that there is difficulty in attaining consensus or respect for national interest. What matters more often than not to the majority side are the interests of the President and his party. To them, the motto always is ‘Either we win or they lose’. You cannot build national unity and consensus with such warped thinking. Despite the big writing on the wall, our colleagues in power seem to be totally drunk with that power and are unable or wish not to see the need for reforms and national dialogue. Lets pray for our country.
