Under 12s A Team Match Report - 19/10/14 After a difficult first round of 2014/15 matches for Selby A U12s, preparations for Week 2 were initially disrupted by the absence of midfield dynamo Daisy Curry, and then a late injury to versatile Darcie Edmunds. Charli Baker on her first coaching assignment, was grateful to call on the talents of Ellie Redshaw from Thirsk HC for what proved to be another valuable day in the girls’ Hockey education. The reversals against Ben Rhydding III (1-0), Wakefield III (3-0), Thirsk III (3-0) and Leeds Adel II (2-0), allowed for notable ‘backs to the wall’ performances throughout the whole team. Special mentions go to Gracie Wilkie and Carys Ward. The experience proved beneficial going into the final game of the day against Slazengers which was an exciting affair. Senior player Ellie Code immediately made her intentions clear with a dazzling left wing run in the first minute. Whilst Slazengers defending in numbers did snuff out her 2nd dribble shortly afterwards, ultimately she was not to be denied and gave Selby a 4th minute lead. Code was an excellent outlet to start Selby attacks and was a constant menace to the opposition defence. The Selby back line, with Ruby Skinner maintaining an excellent defensive position, protected both goalkeeper Gracie Wilkie and allowed the tenacious Carys Ward to step forward and intercept any breaks from midfield. Isobel Almond displayed boundless energy, and no shortage of skill in supporting both defence and attack, as did Hannah Bentley coming in from the wing into congested positions, but not being afraid to lift her head up and calmly pick a pass for Selby to retain possession and ease the growing pressure. Unfortunately, despite heroic efforts, Selby were unable to hold on to the lead, due to an excellent individual goal from the lively Slazengers forward. However, anything less than a draw would have been unfair on another very committed performance Players Player of the day, which underlined the excellent teamwork was shared between Carys Ward, Isobel Almond and Ellie Redshaw. Managers Player of the Day, unanimously voted for by parents and supporters was Ellie Code. Special thanks go to Ellie Redshaw for excellent performances, and to supportive parents on a challenging day which further highlighted the great spirit in the club, both on and off the field. It is apparent that everyones hard work on the training pitch is continuing to transmit to continually improving performances on match days.
