Under Soviet rule religion was outlawed and the Union of the Godless was established. Some 500,000 clerics and true believers disappeared during this time. There is a famous saying that goes a little something like this When you hit the nail on the head, you drive it deeper into the wood. Given the reconstruction of over 70 of the once 700 Orthodox churches in and around St. Petersburg, I believe this saying rings true. For better or for worse, religion is alive and well in Russia in 2014. As for freedom? Well thats an entirely different discussion....
