United in Paris: World leaders join mass rally Dozens of leaders from across the world attend a mass rally in #Paris on Sunday to pay tribute to the 17 people killed in the terrorist attacks that struck the #French capital this week. An estimated 1 million people have gathered in solidarity in the capital at the “Unity Rally” near the Place de la Republique. France has deployed more than 3,000 policemen and soldiers, along with snipers, in and around Paris. “Je Suis Charlie” is the rallying cry as they march holding flags of every European nation in support of the 17 innocent victims that lost their lives during the worst Islamist terror attack to hit Europe in 9 years. The #rally is being attended by French President Francois Hollande, his predecessor Nicolas Sarkozy, along with other world leaders such as German Chancellor Angela Merkel, British Prime Minister David Cameron, Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi, U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder, Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu, Jordans King Abdullah II and Queen Rania, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. It will be an unprecedented manifestation that will be written in the history books, French Prime Minister Manuel Valls said before the event. It must show the power and dignity of the French people, who will cry out their love of liberty and tolerance, he said. The march comprises of two main routes across the city to allow enough space for what is expected to be one of the biggest marches in the capital’s history. Both routes start at Place de la Republique and finish at the Place de la Nation. Today Paris is capital of the world, said President Hollande. The three-day-long terror ordeal in the French capital has sent shockwaves across Europe. It began with an attack at the headquarters of satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo on Wednesday, and the killing of 12 people. It ended with two separate hostage crises, which left 5 people dead. The 3 suspects each died in a flurry of bullets. Brothers Cherif and Said Kouachi were the authors of Wednesdays deadly attack on the office of Charlie Hebdo. Ahmedy Coulibaly was the mastermind of the hostage taking at the kosher supermarket on Friday. Investigators continue to try to track his partner, Hayat Boumeddiene, who is thought to be in Syria after traveling to Turkey on January 2nd.
