Until the controversy it never occurred to me why the restaurant was called Illegal Petes. Apparently it might be named because anything Mexican is associated with undocumented immigrants (also known as illegals). This is ironic because the owner (named Pete) is a pro-immigrant liberal and hes getting support from the anti-immigrant right. The name actually comes from the name of a bar in a novel written by the owners father (also named Pete). Good grief.
