Up-to-date track maintenance technology made by Plasser & Theurer for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. or operation in the "North-South Project", which is currently the largest railway project in the Arab world, Plasser & Theurer is supplying a variety of track maintenance machines. The North-South Project consists of two main lines. The first line begins in Riyadh and runs towards the north-west to Al Haditha, close to the Jordanian border. The second main line runs from Az Zabirah Junction, which is situated in the middle of the first main line and leads to Ras Az Zawr on the Persian Gulf. Apart from that, some branch lines are being built and linked to the existing lines. The total length of the single-track line will be 2,400 km. Founded especially for this large-scale project, Saudi Railway Company SAR decided from the outset to work with the most up-to-date track laying and track maintenance technology The freight traffic with extremely heavy loads and the high-quality passenger traffic, for which speeds of 200 km/h are planned, will place high demands on the tracks. Plasser & Theurer was one of many companies to be awarded with a contract and supplied twelve machines for the maintenance of tracks and turnouts. In detail these are four SRM 500 sand removal machines, three Plasser 08-16 SH levelling, lifting, lining and tamping machines for tracks and turnouts, two DGS-90 N dynamic track stabilizers and three PBR 500 ballast regulating machines. SAR will operate the Plasser 08-16 SH, the DGS 90 N and the PBR 500 in combination as a mechanised maintenance train (MDZ) thus utilising a number of important advantages. Firstly, these are machines that are coordinated to each other perfectly in output, work method and working speed. Secondly, all machines travel at the same transfer speed and finally, all three models feature short set-up and close-down times. In total this can guarantee track maintenance of high quality and with the highest cost-efficiency. The Saudi Railways Organization SRO has ordered a total of ten machines from Plasser & Theurer for the maintenance of their two lines in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. These machines include eight OBW 10 Sprinter track motor vehicles that are suitable for transporting both personnel and material and are equipped with a loading platform and a crane. Moreover, two cyclic-action 2-sleeper tamping machines type Duomatic 08-32 SH (split-head tamping unit) were purchased for efficient track maintenance. In order to accelerate the renewal project of the railway lines under their management, SRO also showed interest in the Plasser & Theurer technology of sand removal. In cooperation with the contracting firm and machine operator Al-Mobty Co. for Contracting two SRM 500 sand removal machines were ordered. The two machines will be supplied in 2012. For cost-efficient maintenance of tracks and turnouts, Al-Mobty Co. for Contracting has also ordered a cyclic-action 2-sleeper tamping machine, type Unimat 08-32 4S for tracks and turnouts, that will go into service in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in 2013. In addition to this, the contracting and track maintenance firm Saudi Archirodon Ltd. ordered an EM 120, a special track recording car with a corrugation measuring system, for the measuring, recording and evaluation of various track parameters. The high performance and quality of all these new machines operating in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia will result in successful track maintenance. Plasser & Theurer is looking forward to a good working partnership with all the machine operators involved.
