!!!!Update- IMPORTANT !!! I know we make Denzel’s life look like its always fun and games, but behind the scenes there is a lot of heartache and hardship that goes into taking on a dog in Denzel’s condition. Today we received some devastating news. We have received a call from the vet at SASH where Denzel had his CT scan. In consultation with the radiologist and 2 other neurologists, has told us that it is unlikely that Denzel’s condition was the result of traumatic injury as he originally thought. Denzel’s case history , progression of disability and a widening of the vertebrae at the site of lesion, has led a multidisciplinary team of specialists to believe that Denzel’s lesion as per the CT, along with his progressive symptoms, suggest a space occupying mass (TUMOUR) in his spine. This is a very uncommon condition in young dogs, but not impossible. Does this change his management and care ? No. Denzel will still get everything he is getting now (physio, hydro, his own pool, special food etc etc). The vet said, given his symptoms and the progressive loss things will get worse from here, and in time (given the rarity of this disease there is no actual “timeframe” )we will need to put him to sleep. N.B SURGERY IS NOT AN OPTION. I wont get into the nitty gritty, in short it will expand. Unfortunately the tumour will likely expand and leave him in constant acute pain. How will we go on from here? Well it’s a bit of a “wait and see” situation. There is a 1-2% chance that all the vets are wrong and it was a traumatic injury, however banking on that would be ill advised. We will monitor him, we will look for any obvious signs of pain and when we are convinced that keeping him alive any longer will be humane, we will make the decision to lay him to rest, before he suffers excessively. Until then, nothing changes. We will give him everything, all of our time, money and effort. Every last waking moment will be enjoyed to the fullest. We will give him a life that would leave any dog envious. We will do our best. We wont be sad. We have no time for that. We will persevere.
