Update on Joe Walley: July 15 6:45 am As excited and uplifted - TopicsExpress

Update on Joe Walley: July 15 6:45 am As excited and uplifted as I was yesterday about the improvements, I am reminded at every turn that Joe is still extremely sick. I just spoke with Dr. Sherman after my visit with Joe at 6. He is showing slow progress. They have turned the vent to 60% to see how Joe tolerates that today. He was not as responsive to me this morning....hopefully this is due to the paralytics and sedation during the night. Dr. Sherman did say they would probably begin turning those meds down. He was taking Gatorade through the NG tube yesterday and did well with that. They are probably going to begin giving him some kind of liquid nutrition today that helps with lung function. Joes potassium is a little low so they will address that as well today. We are probably looking at 7-10 more days in ICU. That pretty much overwhelms me. I guess because it shows just how sick he is. There is still concern about how well he will be able to come off the vent because of the MS. Of course, because I am human, I borrow trouble. As I was told Sunday night by the principal I worked under for years (in her sternest principal voice, with her finger pointed at me..) ONE HOUR AT A TIME. ONLY ONE HOUR AT A TIME. She said to grab the positive in every visit or Dr conference and hold tight to that positive. Another bit of wisdom I have received from this ordeal came from Joes Aunt Jackie Beard. I said, You just never know whats going to happen. She said without skipping a beat, Arent you glad you dont know? It sounded strange at first but the more I think about that statement the more I am grateful I dont know what the future holds. I think it would steal our joy of today and hope for tomorrow. We only need to know the ONE who knows our future and holds our tomorrow. Joe is improving.......that is my positive today. His blood work looks better every day. They have not taken the chest x-ray yet. I think theyve had a busy night in the ER. Hopefully the news from that will give me the lift I need. I cannot write an update without expressing my gratitude to family and friends who have wrapped us in their love and support. I am amazed by how many people have taken time out of their day to visit, call, and message me with encouraging thoughts. It makes my heart happy to know just how loved we are. Love to you all, Belinda
