Update on World Record Attempt The UWI, Mona would again like to express heartfelt thanks to the 3266 students, staff and alumni who registered to participate in our world record attempt to raise awareness for the United Nation’s International day of non- Violence, celebrated last Thursday, October 2. A bigger thank you to the 1859 participants who stayed to the very end, despite the many challenges. You are our true heroes. Your determination, commitment, and team spirit was phenomenal. The process did not go as smoothly as we had hoped, due in part to our efforts to ensure that we were following the guidelines stipulated by Guinness. We do apologize for the inconvenience and really appreciate that in all this, you stood ground patiently, determined to realize the goal we had set out to accomplish. We also thank the more than 100 participants who joined us at the last minute, in response to the appeal for help, when it seemed we would not make the required target. To our volunteers - You all are the embodiment of the true Pelican spirit. Thanks to our partners: LIME Jamaica, Pepsi Jamaica, Running Events Limited, the Gleaner Company Limited, the Jamaica Biscuit Company (Jambisco), Yoga Angels International and Main Event Entertainment Group . You stepped forward to show that you too have zero tolerance for violence in our communities. A special thank you also to world record breakers Yohan Blake and our very own Hansle parchment who came out to help in the attempt. We now have to send the necessary documentation to Guinness but recognize that there were certain technical glitches which may affect confirmation of the record.\ However, even if we do not make it to the Guinness Book of World records, (this time) in our very own book, witnessing 1859 dedicated members of the UWI family joining hands and singing Bob Marley’s “One Love” in protest against the violence plaguing the world is a far more valuable message than any record. It was both a historic and memorable occasion. We will now continue our thrust to make The UWI, Mona violence –free campus, and do our part in helping our high schools, primary schools and communities realize same. From the UWI Mona, again. ..Thank you! Will you join us if we do this again?
