Wednesday, August 14 Memorial of Maximilian Kolbe, priest, martyr No greater love than this Long before Maximilian Kolbe made the decision to die in the place of a condemned prisoner in a Nazi concentration camp, and long before he became a hero and an inspiration to millions and a saint in the church, Kolbe provided shelter to refugees fleeing in the face of the Nazi invasion of Poland. For this courageous act of hospitality he was arrested by the Gestapo and imprisoned, which would lead to his self-sacrificing death. Heroic acts often go on behind the scenes and only later are recognized as such. Would you act heroically when no one was paying attention?
