VICTORIAN ENGLAND Several factors combined to make Great Britain a majestic empire. First of all, Queen Victoria was a believer, as was Albert, her consort. He is said to have found his strength in the Bible and in prayer, and his influence on Victorias thinking was profound. Albert was a man of strong moral principles, irreproachable character, and high ideals . Thus, his keen and benevolent concern over the welfare of all British subjects marked the entire Victorian era as one of law and order and intense patriotism. Victorias long and glorious reign was characterized by aggressive imperialism abroad and democratic principles at home. Two of the most influential assets to Victorias regime were Disraeli and Gladstone, both serving alternately as prime ministers in the later years. Never as popular with the Queen as Disraeli, Gladstone-himself a believer-is best known for his superior domestic politics. On the other hand, Benjamin Disraeli, the first Earl of Isaac DIsraeli, a Jewish convert to Christianity, he quite possibly was also a believer. Certainly he was the first Jew in modern history to have attained renown in a great nation. Disraeli instituted improved domestic programs in housing, health, and working conditions-without socialism. Yet his fame rests on his ingenious foreign policy.
