VIDEO SPECIAL: BLACK HAT BRINGS YOU KEY FOURTH-QUARTER PLAYS & ALL OVERTIME FROM PATTERSON/ ESCALON Escalon High got the street brawl it wanted, with a game that featured physical – and often emotional – play in the pits. Patterson High wasn’t able to force the faster tempo it wanted, but the Tigers still came away with the victory in a battle of longtime rivals. Patterson won this double-overtime “Instant Classic,” with QB Damien Paulo tossing a 10-yard TD to Avion Warmsley on the second play of the Tigers’ second OT possession. That trumped the field goal Thomas Diniz had kicked in Escalon’s possession, giving the Tigers the 27-24 win. We’ve got a special “Double Overtime” video package here for you to enjoy - the final key plays from regulation and then every bit of action from the OT periods. We’ll bust out our full-length package this weekend. Patterson (4-0) is Black Hat’s #7-ranked large school and draws the bye next week while its Western Athletic Conference foes open WAC play. Escalon (2-2) is our #7 small school – its other loss is to No. 2 small-school Los Banos – and opens Trans-Valley League play next week at #8 small-school Ripon (4-0). The Cougars might have found their new running threat in defeat, as 5-foot-7 Frankie Bavaro: Small, but determined, Bavaro had 35 carries for 155 yards. He kept the pile moving much of the night, allowing Escalon to keep its Wing-T on the field far longer than Patterson coach Nick Marchy liked. Patterson had a chance to put the game away in the fourth quarter, leading 14-7 and driving deep into Cougar territory. But Paulo couldn’t convert on fourth-down at the Escalon 16, and the Cougars answered with an 84-yard march for a TD. The Cougars scored when Zach Withrow hauled in a short TD pass from Ben Hood with 4 minutes left, forging the 14-14 tie. Escalon had a chance to win in regulation, after its defense forced a fumble near midfield, but Diniz’s 42-yard field-goal attempt with seconds left was tipped at the line and fell far short. Then came the OT periods: Each team gets four plays to score from the 10-yard line. If it remain tied, they go again … and again. Escalon knows all about OT: The Cougars beat Los Banos in a four-overtime playoff thriller last season. They swapped TDs in the first go-round: Paulo hit Brandon Williams on the first play in the back of the end zone, then Escalon’s Scott May scored on a fourth-down sweep from the 4 to tie. Both teams kicked the PATs to make it 21-21. On the second series, Escalon elected to kick a field goal from the 5-yard line – feeling the need to get some points on the board since it was on offense first. Had Escalon come away scoreless, Patterson could have trotted its kicker onto the field and kicked a 27-yard gield goal to win it without even trying to move the ball.
