Vent- PTSD is highly misunderstood. 1. PTSD can be caused my any traumatic event, not just combat (ie: rape, surviving a bad car wreck) 2. Everyone has different triggers and different ways of responding to their surroundings, etc. 3. Not only those with PTSD deal with the aftermath. Many families suffer from STS (secondary traumatic syndrome) which is a result of direct relation/living with someone with PTSD. 4. Treatment for those who suffer from PTSD differs, as does meds. 5. The media only focuses on the negative. 5. Not everyone who has PTSD is, for lack of better word, unstable. If that were the case, you would see significant incidents every day. Most are able to live somewhat normal lives, albeit sometimes helped my meds. They are still members of our society and they contribute to those societies. They have shown strength by taking a step and admitting the battle they fight within in hopes that someone else may reach out for help. Bottom line - if there is something you dont understand, and this goes for anything, do not judge, do not place a stigma until you have taken the time to educate yourself on the subject and help to understand.
