Very apposite and very true.The USA is one of the most insular and self-gratifying nations on the planet. Only 5% of Yankees travel abroad even though 35% of them do hold passports. (I use the description Yankee to distinguish them from the other majority of Americans and not in a disparaging way. Strictly the adjective american can apply to everyone coming from the Americas. Like European is used in our part of the world. We then further distinguish people by using nationality descriptions like British, German, etc.. But there doesnt seem to be any other logical national name for the USA people outside of Yankee. We can talk about Canadians, Mexicans, Brazilians etc. as also Americans but nothing for The United States). Population of the USA, January 2014; 317 million. [China 1,390 million; India 1,270 million; UK 63 million] Number of privately held guns in the USA, 300million, nearly one for every citizen numerically. Violent Crimes in USA 2013; 1.16 million. [387 per 100,000 people] Of which Murder is 5.2 equivalent to 15,600 per year.[UK 0.3 per 100,000 people equivalent to 189 per year]. Number of citizens held in prison in USA 2.2 million. 0.725% of the population, the highest rate and the highest actual total in the World.[China 0.013%, Russia 0.62%,UK 0.014%] In 2012 the most recent year for which data is available, the poverty threshold for a family of four was $23,492. The official national poverty rate was 15.0 percent. There were 46.5 million people living in poverty.
