Very interesting, but also pretty common weather setup today. This is what is called Cold Air Damming or a Wedge. A strong high pressure system off to the northeast brings winds from the north, which will help bank the air up against the Appalachians. When that happens, cold air gets socked in under a blanket of low-level clouds. Thats why you see large temperature differences from west to east!
