Very sad day yesterday. For about 3 years my uncle had befriended - TopicsExpress

Very sad day yesterday. For about 3 years my uncle had befriended this sweet little stray tabby, Amber, aka ‘Killer’. He would spend 20 minutes each of 2 or 3 times a day sitting outside, in all types of weather, with her on his lap, petting her. Last year in April, we started letting her come in the house and had pretty much kept her in all winter since all the bad weather began. Killer had wheezing and sneezing issues for several years, but it had been deemed nothing serious. She loved being wherever we were, lying on Unkie’s lap, on the end table, under the bed..on the bed, and yes, even on the kitchen counter and microwave. After I got off work last night we were looking out the door at the snow. Killer started to go out, but I pulled her back in. She was on the kitchen counter a little bit after that, till I got her off. Unkie went to bed, so she ate, then went under the bed. Another hour or so, as I was headed into the hall to go to bed myself, Killer was lying on the floor between Unkie’s room and the hall. Nothing different about that, but she was on her side, head down, her breathing was very labored, and her tongue hanging to the side. I realized she was actually gagging. I leaned down to pet her, but knew something was very wrong. Knowing the vet would be in already, I phoned and explained the situation. Now I had been up about 22 hours, so when they said to bring her in immediately….considering I had an inch of ice to scrape off my van…I was, for one split second, divided …….vet? sleep? Of course, vet won. In the 2 minutes it took me to get dressed and come back to check on her, Killer had died! She just plain died. Right there, middle of the hall. Dead! And YES, I did go ahead and took her to the vet anyway. Nothing definite certainly, but thoughts are that she had possible blood clot? Aneurysm? Feline leukemia? Could be anything, but the fact that it was a matter of maybe 4 hours she went from her ‘normal’ to dead in the hall was just about as baffling as it gets ! What the hell happened?? So sad. She was the one constant in Unkie’s day….she kept him company for the long evening /night hours while I worked. We cannot bring in other pets now because too much chance they will be let out accidentally. She was a stray here to begin with, so she was familiar, and knew where home was. Not so sure another would know. To fill the void, we are going to spend several days a week volunteering at the local animal no-kill shelter in the petting room, and walking the dogs:) We will take food and litter for them, so it will be like having a lot of pets to care for and love…at least for as long as it takes to get them adopted. I feel so sad…..Killer was such a neat little addition, and very grateful for her warm home in her last winter. So glad she wasn’t still outside, in the cold, alone. How fitting this is the beginning of Lent. Dust to dust, ashes to ashes……hers will be distributed out over the back yard…..her Oasis…….a place she loved:) Thank you, Killer, for all the love you shared……….
