Very sad news that has been devastating for me the past few days. Jade has severe kidney dysfunction, disease and possible cancer of the kidney-in addition to having gout. His uric acid levels are at 43 when they should be between 8-9. 30 is fatal. He is still alive. His symptom came on suddenly, but he has had a history of kidney elevation. Wednesday of last week, he was fine. Thursday, he acted like arthritis was acting up in his foot from an old wound. Today, he climbs, but essentially will not perch and would rather sit on the heating pad near the heat lamp as his primary place to be. From normal to not-so-normal quickly. His featheration is gorgeous, no other clinical signs. Essentially, he cannot walk on one of his legs. The nerve is being pinched by a large, nasty tumor on Xray of the kidney. The tumor is inoperable. We do not know the nature of the tumor--but it is not calcified. The research and data Im finding, it could look like a gout-based kidney as well. So, Im doing research on Kidneys in parrots, affect of diet on the kidneys in parrots and am finding some interesting results. A great article about kidney failure and gout with birds clinically is a link on the website 2ndchance.info/gout.htm. Within that is the actual, clinical book, dont know name of it, within which is chapter 21, Nephrology, written by Dr. J.T. Lumeij. Stating steroids, that Jade is taking, is helpful, in addition to possibly using Omega 3-6 fatty acids, sub q fluids, cherry juice use. Looking into the use of Allopurinol. Firstly, sprouts, sprouts, sprouts. Use them, you can never not use enough of them or too much of them, apparently. Secondly, veggie mixes are good, but not as good as sprouts--which includes Chop ingredients. Formulated diets good, but not enough fiber and higher in protein. When looking to reduce protein to nearly nothing in pellets due to gout, however, must be minimized. Great research out there by Dr. Susan Orosz, Dr. Lafeber, Dr. Roudybush, Dr. Brightsmith in peer review. Greens mixed in Chop blend, minus any form of spinach. NOODLES are great. GRAINS are great. A normal, functioning bird, however, needs protein at about 14-16%. So, Ive found. Pelleted diets: ZuPreem, Harrisons, LaFebers, Roudybush are all pretty good across the board. Here is a great data analyzer to use provided on the ZuPreem site: You have to click add to add every ingredient you feed your bird and at what percentage to see what mix you are giving them is working or not. Im really grateful for this analysis....one of many tools. birdfoodfacts In addition, to talk to Shauna on Feeding Feathers yahoo group. Reta Bray, nutrional advisor at Flight Club Foundation and co-mod of feeding feathers.
