Veterans Day Pride: My mother, Judy Shughart Line and her siblings Jay Shughart, Parker Shughart, Nancy Hoff, Virginia Wessels, Bob Shughart, Dixie Fenicle and David Shughart were the 4th cousins of a man I doubt any of us ever knew. His name was Randall Shughart. When you start talking about 3rd and 4th cousins, it is easy to get lost. The surname Shughart is name that is rooted in south central Pennsylvania. So, if you have that last name---you ARE blood related to me because my mom was a Shughart (Funny thing, when researching my family, I found Shugharts who lived all across the country--all of whom traced their genealogy back to Cumberland County, PA!). All of us in the Shughart lineage date back to Hartmann Schuchart (possibly the original spelling). Anyway, Randall Shughart would be my 4th cousin once removed along with all of my 1st cousins in that family. I say all that to state that a Naval Boat I have posted bares the name USNS Shughart. It was named after US Army Sergeant First Class Randall D. Shughart, who was awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously. If youve ever seen the movie BLACK HAWK DOWN or read anything about the Battle of Mogadishu in October 1993, you know that Randall David Randy Shughart (August 13, 1958 – October 3, 1993) was a United States Army soldier of the special operations unit, 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment-Delta (1SFOD-D), also known as Delta Force. Shughart lost his life in that battle. He is buried at the Westminster Cemetery in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, not far from my grandparents Maynard Leroy Shughart and my grandmother Gail Karper Shughart. Maynard and Randys dad were 3rd cousins--but I doubt they knew each other very well (if even at all). My grandfather Maynard served in the U.S. Navy during WW2 where he, ironically, served on a boat. In honor of his service and in honor of the sacrifices the Shughart family made, I have posted a photo of my grandfather in both in his Navy Uniform from WW2 and in a photo taken circa 1986. I am proud! (Im going to try and tag everybody who I know has a facebook account or who has a spouse with one--but if I forget a few of you forgive me! Weve got a huge family!)
