#article #seafarer #story Dear Readers, today we are bringing to your attention interview with interesting person Captin Amin Dar. -Tell us about yourself: -Where did You study I studied at Pakistan / Pakistan Navy - How did You become a Sailor Was interested in travelling, so I joined Pakistan Navy in Dec: 1978 as sailor, during staying at Pakistan Navy, I got chance to get different types of trainings. - What did You do before Sailing I was sailor at Pakistan Navy and time by time I got promotion - What is your rank now ? Master - How many years in sea? 25 years at Pakistan Navy and 11 years in Merchant Navy -Do You remember your first contract ? As I told I was at Pakistan Navy for 25 years, when I tried to join Merchant Navy, I got surprise that I am fresher/new in this line so I should join any VSL even whether like or not , so I got a chance to Embark on board Harbor Assist Tug( Karachi Port Trust) as trainee officer, after around 3 month I disembark to get some experience -What was your first impression, from work at sea? Due to the flexible attitude and adaptability the impression was quit enjoyable . - What was the first type of vessel You worked on ? 1979 I join 250 mtr. “ L.O DESTROYER” -What difficulties did You face during changing the type of vessel and why did You change it? Every type has got its own limitations and operational techniques with the nature of trade, route, nature of cargo and the crew multiple or single nationality. My parent company has got different types of vessel on different routes. Later the changing of companies were for the better, chances and availing opportunities. -Looking back, how do You think: What’s different between the sea of 20 and 21 centuries? Or how did the sea change for last 10 years? There are different angles and views life became under more stressed due less numbers of crew compliance of rules, enforcing time to time. Got many more facilities, automation, shore facility involvement, taking care of safety via ism implementation. Due new technology perpetual updating and HSC/quality control has paid his own role. -Tell us about the most fascinating occasion with You or your colleagues? When I have crossed Equator in 1983 and all of us play drama about king Neptune and enjoy a lot - Do You agree with the expression: A seafarer is not a profession but a way of life? How this impact on You? Yes I do agree with this expression. If you will make the things like home and the part and parcel of your life you will not succeed in the sea -life. One has forgot his home temporarily not permanently just to avoid the home sickness. - It is believed, that the sailors are quite superstitious. Is it true? If yes, what omens is particular concern to You? Do You have a special maritime tradition? Yes there are many stories behind this expression. Especially, when you join the Second hand vessel or passenger v/l one find lot of stories over there. But still not happened or seen unusual phenomenon. Russian saying: “Red rising or setting sun gives u bad weather must be secure yourself very well.” Most of the times found true. -Does the sea forgive mistakes? Did You have such mistakes? How did they affect on your career? Sea is source of our job, but sea is friend of none, no and never sea forgave you. There is hardly any chance. Though I have not been involved but the cases seen in the main and other journals creates awareness that be carefully vigilant. Best example is the effects and bad remarks on your service book and certificate of competency. Other form is the imprisonment and penalties all contributes there own role. - How do You achieved growth and success so quickly? What did You do for this? Share your experience with your beginner colleagues. Should be self -motivated every one, believe on hard working and loyalty with company, listen to your seniors. Keep your eyes and ears open. Observe analyze and cross check for the correctness when where got the chance regardless the man or machine help. Be sincere with yourself otherwise u cannot be sincere with the others. I can give only the things have excess therefore have to be full of gracious and gratitude. -What would You advise the young seafarers (fellow countryman). Parting words Always be positive, think positive, do positive and have positive, respect your seniors today, and your juniors will respect you tomorrow. -What type of vessel You prefer to work on. What would You like to be perfect on that Vessel to increase comfort and improve the quality of work, and what ,as You think, is not enough thought out by engineers? I like passenger ships, accommodation barges , but will enjoy all types except the tanker family. I did not got chance to Command onboard Passenger ship but have perform on board Passenger Ferry as Master I feel comfort able due to friendly atmosphere, other side Accommodation Barges are little bit different you have to face different types of workers from different nationalities, you have to manage/solve all matters smoothly within less sources, other side Passenger ships have more facilities, due to more requirements other side Engineers have more work due to more requirement of facilities, on board Cargo ships, we can delay any thing for a while but on board Passenger Ship, we Can’t Ignore even small problem, as per hospitality requirement also have more requirements of L.S.A and FF arrangement and have to manage how to train Passengers to use safety related things in any Emergency.
