Despite a UN plan for a free and fair referendum on self-determination, Morocco refuses to allow the Saharawi people to vote on their own future. Morocco knows they’d vote for independence. This week, I joined a Western Sahara delegation to Downing Street. We urged David Cameron to lobby for UN monitors from MINURSO to be mandated to investigate widespread human rights abuses by the Moroccan occupation regime. These abuses include the violent suppression of peaceful Saharawi protests for self-rule and the victimisation of Saharawi human rights defenders. France has always sided with Morocco and has repeatedly obstructed attempts to secure a referendum and UN human rights monitoring.
