Via Sean Dimond... Interesting: I did a bit of research and was interested to learn where the US stands in a variety of basic, human indicators. Globally, we rank as follows: EDUCATION 22nd in literacy 25th in math 17th in science 14th in reading 58th in primary education enrollment rate HEALTH We spend on healthcare more then 2 1/2 times more per person than ANY other developed nation, and yet were: 33rd in life expectancy 47th in maternal mortality rate 48th in infant mortality ECONOMY In spite of our wealth, we are: 34th in population below the poverty line 27th on global gender gap (measuring economic disparity between genders) 101st in unemployment rate 63rd in unemployment of youth between 15-24% 12th in GDP per capita 30th in life expectancy at birth 39th in environmental performance and weve NEVER won a World Cup championship! Now, we are however, Number One in the following categories: - guns per capita - # of incarcerated citizens per capita - oil consumption - carbon dioxide emissions - military arms sold to the world - and defense spending. were also, thankfully, #1 in economic aid given. The nations that are regularly at the top of these lists are: Finland, Switzerland, Singapore, New Zealand, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Japan, Canada, Qatar, Netherlands, Iceland, Ireland, U.K., and Hong Kong. Given all of the travel I do, I love coming home to the United States -- for so many reasons. Granted, happiness and contentment are linked more to gratitude and what you give than to what you get out of life. Nevertheless, other than Canada, Ive not spent any substantive time in any of the top countries. Curious.
