Victory for elephants! New Jersey has become the first US state to ban the sale/import of ivory and rhino horns. Earlier this year the US government prohibited the importation of African elephant ivory, but made exceptions for worked ivory from before 1976. New Jersey, a major hub for illegal trade in ivory and horns, now closes important loopholes, banning intrastate activity and making no exception for antiques. The latter is vital to secure more efficient law enforcement. We’re happy to know that this was a bipartisan bill - we applaud New Jersey’s Governor Chris Christie for this important decision and urge New York’s Andrew Cuomo to follow!
