Violence is often inextricably intertwined with the reality of human trafficking. Previous experience of violence is a vulnerability that traffickers identify and readily exploit. Having survived violence can make people more vulnerable to human trafficking. A live-in domestic worker, for example, who was previously abused by her husband may experience lowered self-esteem. This lowered self-esteem may then be exploited by her employer such that the woman is made to feel that she deserves the mistreatment. We work with survivors every day who are rebuilding their lives and their senses of self, who were mistreated before they were trafficked, who survived degradation, who have the space and safety they need for the first time in a long time. Their survival is heroic, but that slavery still exists is appalling. We know human traffickers are not the only people who prey on those made vulnerable by violence.
