Vitamin B12 (cobalamin, Cbl) is a water-soluble vitamin important - TopicsExpress

Vitamin B12 (cobalamin, Cbl) is a water-soluble vitamin important in the nervous system and formation of blood. It is synthesized by certain bacteria and archea with the appropriate enzymes. Sources of this vitamin come from animal derived foods and supplements. The pharmacokinetic property of Cbl is readily absorbed in the distal ileum. This may be an issue for #Crohns patients who have diseased areas or who underwent surgery to remove parts of the small bowl and ileum. However the following review does not support an association of Crohns disease in general, regardless of ileal involvement, with Cbl deficiency. This review examines whether #IBD predisposes to Cbl deficiency: prevalence, risk factors, evaluation, and management. journals.lww/ibdjournal/Fulltext/2014/06000/Vitamin_B12_Deficiency_in_Inflammatory_Bowel.18.aspx
