Voice host Darren McMullen’s heartbreak at turning down two major acting roles and our luck THE Voice host Darren McMullen has revealed his heartbreak at turning down two Hollywood acting roles. McMullen auditioned for, and got, a part in the sitcom Are You There, Chelsea, based on an autobiography by US comedian Chelsea Handler. McMullen was to play Handler’s best friend on the show. But, at the time, in 2012, McMullen was under contract as host of a US reality show, and had to pass on the Handler project. McMullen told HWTM : “I think things happen at the right time. But it made me take note: ‘I’ve got a knack for this acting thing. I should follow my passion.’” Soon after, another Tinseltown offer was thwarted. Producers from the US version of The Office cast McMullen in the final series of the Steve Carrell hit. But McMullen was locked into hosting a London Olympics talk show for Britain’s ITV. “It was hard to be annoyed because the talk show went out to 47 countries. But I don’t want to turn down roles like that again,” McMullen said. McMullen will finally test his acting chops when Nine’s popular drama, House Husbands, returns to prime time tonight. He plays Alex, an eccentric librarian who becomes a love interest for one of the main characters on the show. McMullen said: “Everyone was so welcoming in that cast and crew. They went out of their way to make me feel part of the family. I’ve been on different sets throughout my career, and it’s not always the way. Sometimes there are a lot of politics.” McMullen never formally trained as an actor, but had a keen interest in drama at school. Is the popular television presenter a frustrated actor underneath it all? “Probably,” he laughed. “It would explain some of my behaviour if I was a tortured artist. I definitely have big arguments with myself sometimes. “I love doing live television and playing that role. It is a role, essentially. I’m not the person I am in real life on The Voice. It’s a character. I couldn’t be my real self on The Voice. I’d be arrested.”
