Voiceless266-271: Pain Is Love... Right? I accidentally deleted all the notes Id been saving about the cycling journey so far (what an absolute legend move) so Ill just tell you what comes to mind. Until yesterday, unfortunately the time Im spending on the bike has been up there with the least fun Ive ever had! The pain in my butt bones and the palms of my hands has been constant and intense. It takes up all my concentration to continuously adjust my position so I can try to make myself less uncomfortable, which means I havent been able to listen to music and definitely no audio books because I need all my focus on the bike. Its been very challenging to enjoy except for the occasional downhill which means I can get my butt of the seat and get some feeling back. There was about 100kms a couple of days ago where over and over again in my head I was dreaming about the guy who sold me the seat, shaking him and screaming Dude, you want to give me THAT seat!! No way!!!! Are you crazy!? Give me one that is COMFORTABLE!!! Yesterday I had the genius idea to cut up a big sponge that would usually be used to wash a car and stuffed it into my gloves. This took the vibe from extremely uncomfortable, bypassed highly uncomfortable and settled at very uncomfortable. Actually, it was a significant improvement and I was able to listen to some lectures by Gary Francione and cycle the furthest so far in one hit which was 90kms. So far Ive rode at least 60kms every day and was averaging about 20kms an hour which I assume Im still averaging but my odometer broke so now its all a guess. I miss my odometer. It was kind of like having a friend with me cheering me on every kilometre passed. There are rarely any signs between the long stretches of towns, sometimes you think Yessss, Im almost there for sureeee. And then, 2 hours later, you still arent there and are ready to pull over and start kicking trees. On the other hand, it can feel like youve got ages to go, then you see a sign coming up, peddle as fast as you can in anticipation, Please be 20kms, please be 20kms…. and then, 5kms!!! No way!!!!!! YESSS!!!!!!! Ive met some awesome peeps along the way. Firstly, I was riding up hill and rode past a road train (massive truck) who had broken down. I got about 20ms past and he starts screaming Go son, go!!!! Actually, come back! Ive got a rum for ya! I rode back, declined the rum, but scored an icy cold bottle of water. In this heat, cold drinks are more precious than gold around here. I continued riding and stopped at the next roadhouse where he later ended up also and after finding out what I was doing and why, he offered to pay for me to sleep in a room for the night. Total champ! I slept for 11 hours. I also met a couple named Rob and Josié who I sat down with at a campsite and we had an in-depth discussion about animal rights. They are from Amsterdam and Rob had family who were victims of the Holocaust. We spoke about the connection between treating and describing the humans the same way as they would animals to make it easier in the minds of the soldiers who were doing the killing. He also closely examined my tattoos and agreed with the quote Auschwitz begins whenever someone looks at a slaughterhouse and thinks; theyre only animals. Ill finished with a quote of my own: I dont smoke meth or shoot heroin because I dont want to ruin my life. I dont eat meat, cheese, milk or eggs because I dont want to ruin someone elses. 600kms complete - might as well be a million to go! Time to get back to business!
