Volunteerism is necessary in moulding students to become future leaders who can contribute positively to society, said MCA president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai. He said these out-of-classroom projects enable students to realise their management and leadership skills as well as learn to handle differences in opinion. “These are things that they cannot learn from the books. “As students, their role is not just to excel academically. “They can apply the knowledge they learn in schools to give back to society while picking up other good values through the deeds,” he told Tunku Abdul Rahman University College students at a ceremony to hand over funds to 16 charity organisations and homes yesterday. A total of RM133,500 was raised by 3,400 students through a Civic Consciousness and Volunteerism Charity Project themed “Children’s Protection and Welfare – Our Responsibility” last October and November. “I am proud and happy to see these students doing their bit in fulfilling their civic responsibility for the betterment of society,” said Liow, who is also the institution’s board of trustees’ chairman. He said more than 100 students would also head to Kuala Krai in Kelantan for voluntary flood relief work this weekend. He also reminded the students to reject terrorism brought by a small group of extremists to ensure the continuous progress of Malaysia as a safe and harmonious multi-racial nation. Later at a press conference, Liow, who is also the Transport Minister, reiterated the importance of real-time global tracking for commercial flights in the wake of a series of aviation accidents worldwide while calling for the proposal to be quickly implemented. On the missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370, Liow said the Family Support Centre in Beijing was still in operation to provide counselling and assistance for the next of kin of passengers on board. “We are also updating them on the progress of the search and rescue mission,” he added.
