ActONE is a voluntary, non-profit drama group, with five successful productions since 2007, the latest being The Bronte Boy by Mick Yates, staged in spring 2013 to an international audience at Howarth Parsonage and later at Carriageworks Studio, Leeds. Actors are paid a nominal fee of £50. Good experience and press exposure are likely, plus hopefully a stimulating and enjoyable working arena. Shakespeare in Terror is based on the premise of the historically possible encounter between Shakespeare and Guy Fawkes in late 1605, and how this might have influenced events around the Gunpowder Plot, not to mention the writing of Macbeth. The style is surreal, reflecting fantasy elements involved. The tone is more Shakespeare in Love than authentic Jacobean period piece, but the drama deals with serious themes, including terrorism in pursuit of religious ideals, the price of fame, love and betrayal – all laced with a large dose of black comedy. Director, Dr. Eric Hetzler is a Senior Lecturer in Drama at the University of Huddersfield. He is an actor and director as well as the former Executive Director of the Central Minnesota Civic Theatre. Some of his directing credits include Cabaret, Romeo and Juliet, Attempts on Her Life, Spring Awakening, Annie Wobbler and Dracula. He moved to the UK in 2004 to study for his PhD which he received from the University of Exeter in 2007. Writer, Helen Shay has had several works staged regionally and at Edinburgh, with some further afield such as the Philippines. One won a UNESCO-sponsored award and was translated into Italian. Helen teaches playwriting at CLL, University of York, has an MA (distinction awarded) in Creative Writing, is on Script Yorkshire’s management board and a member of York Settlement Players.
