WARNING FOR PET PARENTS! I was recently contacted by a loving pet parent who shared a very scary experience she went through with her beloved dog today. She wanted to spread the word so that no one else would have to go through the same thing in hopes of saving lives. Her goldendoodle almost died tonight because he ate a pack of sugar free gum. When they returned home early (thank God they did) he was lethargic and unable to move, so they rushed him to the vet. His liver counts, which I assume were his enzymes, which should be around 110, were at 800, and keep in mind that 1100 is fatal. Imagine if this had been a small dog. This happened very quickly. Had they not reacted as quickly as they did and rushed him to the vet, he would have been dead within the hour. Many people are not aware that the artificial sweetener, Xylitol, commonly used in sugar free gum. It is extremely toxic to dogs. It causes severe liver damage and can kill a dog in 30 minutes. Please keep your purse and jackets out of reach of your pets if you carry sugar free gum and dont leave it on your nightstand, end tables or countertops. It could save their life.
