WBC ORDERS LINARES-PRIETO FOR 135 LB. TITLE; FIGUEROA NAMED CHAMPION IN RECESS The WBC have announced that former Two-Division World Champion Jorge Linares (37-3, 24KOs) will fight WBC Silver Lightweight Champion Javier Prieto (24-7-2, 18KOs) for the vacant WBC Lightweight World Championship; & say the fight will take place before the end of the year 2014. WBC Lightweight World Champion Omar Figueroa (24-0-1, 18KOs) has been named as the WBC Champion In Recess while he recovers from a terrible eye injury sustained in his August 16 9th round KO win over mandatory challenger Daniel Estrada. The WBC said that the winner of Linares-Prieto would to defend the WBC 135 lb. Championship against Figueroa whenever Omar was ready & able to return to the ring; if he chooses to remain at 135 lb. when he returns. The WBC Board of Governors has voted unanimously to support Omar Figueroa while he is recovering from an injury sustained in his mandatory title defense of August 16 vs. Daniel Estrada WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman announced in a statement. After the fight, his cut was infected and had to receive additional treatment. He has been placed as Champion in Recess, which will allow him to take the necessary time to heal and to begin training without any time pressure. The WBC has ordered the two highest available contenders to fight for the WBC lightweight championship, with the condition that the winner must fight Figueroa whenever he is ready to return to the ring. Jorge Linares vs. Javier Prieto has been ordered and is expected to be promoted within 2014.
