WEATHER UPDATE! Environment Canada has issued a Special weather statement for: Coquihalla Highway - Hope to Merritt Highway 3 - Hope to Princeton via Allison Pass Highway 3 - Paulson Summit to Kootenay Pass Trans Canada Highway - Eagle Pass to Rogers Pass Highway 97 - Pine Pass. Heavy snow for Pine Pass tonight. Heavy snow for the southern highway passes beginning Sunday afternoon. A moisture laden low pressure system from the Pacific is forecast to cross the Central Interior tonight. At the same time an Arctic front will approach the North Rockies from the northeast. The two weather systems will combine to produce heavy snow over the Pine Pass area tonight into Sunday morning. Initially temperatures will be warm enough for the precipitation to fall as rain early this evening before turning to heavy snow overnight. Amounts of 15 to 25 centimetres of snow are possible along highway 97 through Sunday morning with the heaviest amounts expected east of Pine Pass where the Arctic air will arrive first. Gusty winds are also expected tonight with local blowing snow overnight lowering visibilities. Meanwhile, a strong and moist westerly flow in combination with lowering freezing levels will bring locally heavy snowfall to the southern mountain passes beginning overnight with the heaviest amount expected on Sunday afternoon and evening. Snowfall amounts of 10 to 20 cm are possible with higher amounts of 20 to 30 cm for Highway 3 -Paulson Summit to Kootenay Pass.
