WHAT A SHAME – Another Senior Scam! Boomers & Seniors this weekend I was told about a story that involved an elderly neighbor. I tell this story in the hopes that you’ll be spared what has obviously become a most devastating experience for her. The scam unfolded like this: My neighbor was out tending to her flower garden and a young man walks up and engages her in conversation. He asks whether she needs any “clean-up” work done. She proceeds to take him to her back yard to show her the work she needs done. In the meantime, he has communicated with a 2nd party notifying the 2nd party that he has the homeowner in the back yard, which signaled for the 2nd party to go into the house and retrieve anything of value. Well, party #2 goes to the closet where the homeowner has her 100 pound safe with all of her valuables, i.e. living trust, insurance papers, and yes, an unknown amount of CASH. Imagine: The 100 pound safe is hauled away. The alleged “clean-up” man leaves the property. Totally unaware that anything has happened, the homeowner goes into her bedroom and notices the closet door is open and declares to herself that she was sure she had not left the closet door open. Well, she was right. She hadn’t but the thieves had – they had taken everything she owned. She was overcome by a deep sickening feeling and was unable to eat any food for 2 days. What a shame!! DO YOU LIVE ALONE? 1. Do not open your door to strangers. 2. If you’re out in your yard as my neighbor was, if you need to go from the front yard to the back yard, please lock all doors to your house, and put your keys in your pocket.
