WHAT IS INITIATION? In modern times it is not uncommon for people to regard initiation as simply joining something, being accepted into something, or performing a ceremony to proclaim some type of personal commitment. This modern idea sharply contrasts with the original model as known in the Inner Mystery Traditions. Initiation, at its core, is about transformation and passage. The most effective initiations are constructed through time-proven methods to bring a person into a process. This process, formulated in stages of the rite, gradually immerses the individual in a stream of consciousness that shifts the mundane into the mystical. Initiation is also designed to bring the individual into contact with the emanation of deities, spirits and forces to which the Tradition is connected. This intimate contact is the release into the spiritual moment of the rite. Effective Initiation allows the individual to pass through self-limitations and self-imposed barriers. This liberation frees the psyche and aids in fully embracing a personal transformation. Without transformation an initiation is only a ceremony. One of the goals of initiation is to activate, open, and alignment the inner centers of power that unite mind. body, spirit. The helps the individual become an effective vessel, unobstructed by its wounds, fears, and the limitations she or he has come to accept in life. In the Ash, Birch and Willow tradition there are two types of initiation rites. One is known as initiation by object and the other in called in person initiation. The first one is designed for individuals who are unable to meet with a personal initiation for whatever reasons. The individual is strongly encouraged to arrange for in person initiation at some point. But in the meantime enough alignment is established so that the person can then begin formal training in the Arts of Witchcraft. An in person initiation will later complete the process of transformation and alignment that will aid the initiate in mastering the Ways. The initiation by object involves uses a magically charged object sent by the initiators. A time is arranged when the individual will perform the ritual at the same moment that the initiators work on their in a supporting rite. The Ash, Birch and Willow tradition offers a home study Course that can lead to initiation into the tradition.
