WHO EXACTLY WAS THIS JESUS OF NAZARETH? Part 1 In his book, “More Than a Carpenter”, Josh McDowell leaves us with only three options to contemplate concerning Jesus of Nazareth – He was either “Lord, Liar, or Lunatic.” He says that either everything Jesus claimed to be was the absolute truth, or He was the greatest imposter of all time. In this Bible Study, you will view several of the prophecies concerning Jesus Christ. You will also read several of the proclamations made by the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Finally, you will see the fulfillment of those prophecies and proclamations come to pass – directly in the person of Jesus Christ. Can anything good thing come out of Nazareth? Let’s take a closer look. So what do YOU think about Jesus? This was actually a question posed by Jesus himself on more than one occasion: Matthew 22:42 Saying, What think ye of Christ? whose son is he? They say unto him, The son of David. KJV Matthew 16:13-16 13 When Jesus came into the region of Caesarea Philippi, He asked His disciples, saying, “Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am?” 14 So they said, “Some say John the Baptist, some Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” 15 He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” 16 Simon Peter answered and said, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” NKJV John 14: 6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. NKJV Christianity teaches that Jesus was both the son of man, and the Son of God. He was the son of man, speaking of His human birth, or His humanity. (He was also referred to as the son of David, speaking of His lineage). He was the Son of God, speaking of His Holy Spirit conception, or His Divinity. He was God, revealed to us in human flesh. Some people believe in Jesus as a human son of God, but not as the divine Son of God. Some believe in Jesus’ existence, but not as The Messiah. Some view Jesus as one of the prophets, and one of many pathways to God. Notice that the central point of disagreement revolves around the person of Jesus Christ. You can proclaim a belief in God, and few will be offended, but when your belief boldly proclaims Jesus to be the very God you speak of, it becomes a dividing line that splits the world. Their stumbling block becomes your stepping stone to the power and wisdom of God: 1 Corinthians 1:22-24 22 For Jews request a sign, and Greeks seek after wisdom; 23 but we preach Christ crucified, to the Jews a stumbling block and to the Greeks foolishness, 24 but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.
