WHY DOES EVERYONE SEEM TO BE VIT D DEFICIENT? I constantly come across clients with low vit D status. Seems strange doesnt it since we live in one of the sunniest places on earth! Vitamin D protects the body from aggressive forms of cancer & skin cancer. As well as, diseases like multiple sclerosis, rickets (in the young), tuberculosis, inflammatory bowel disease, type 1 diabetes, inflammatory bowel disease, rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus and Sjogren’s syndrome. Important yes!! What can we do to increase our vit D levels naturally? 2 things that are really important: 1) DONT USE FOAMING CLEANSERS Your skin contains a cholesterol substance called provitamin D3 that reacts with the ultraviolet-B rays in sunlight to form cholesterol. This cholesterol substance is concentrated in sebum – the oily material produced at the hair follicle. And it takes up to 48 hours after sun exposure for vitamin D to be manufactured in the skin. Once or twice every day we disrupt this with our cleansing ritual. Anything that saponifies (foams up) – soap, shampoo, bodywash and really hot water, emulsifies sebum and lifts it off the surface of your skin, halting vit D production. The SOLUTION - Use tepid or warm water to shower or bathe in. And use non sudsing cleansers. Simple vegetable oils like almond, olive or coconut oil are great cleansers. You can add essential oils for fragrance if you like. And your skin will love it! 2) SUNBATHE!!! You need a daily exposure of 10-20mins of sun on unprotected skin to get adequate vit D production. Thats right no sunscreen & no clothes! You need your skin to start to tingle & have a little pink flush to it to ensure vit D production is occurring. Any longer than this provides no added benefit. So in the winter on a warm day, go outside in your lunch break & take off your jacket, roll up yours leaves, bear you legs, unbutton your top, and soak up some sun for 20mins. In the summer time just 10mins a day will provide the same benefit. Below is an article on the use of sunscreen and cancer. Quite interesting. 😊 theunboundedspirit/scientists-blow-the-lid-on-cancer-sunscreen-myth/
