WHY I AM UNABLE TO MEET MY TARGET IN BENUE, BY SUSWAM Governor Gabriel Suswam of Benue State last week played host to some journalists in the state, during which he fielded questions from them on critical issues relating to the state and some national issues. Our correspondent Joseph Wantu was there. Excerpts: How far is it true that local councils in #Benue State have been dissolved? NO, as a lawyer, I will not do anything that will lead me to litigation. Local government councils’ tenure will end on November 27, 2014 and under the law their tenure expires that day. Would you conduct election into these councils before you leave office next year? Well, I had thought I will be able to conduct elections before then but given the fact that I am still struggling with the payment of salaries, I may be unable to conduct that election. To conduct election now will cost about one billion naira and the state does not have that kind of money now. So, we will put caretaker committees in place, when their tenure expires, we will see whether it is possible to conduct an election before I exit from office next May. If that is not feasible the in-coming administration would have to do that. You recently announced plan to create new local governments in the state, will this happen before the election? Yes we will start before the election but I’m not sure we will finish it before the elections. I have just inaugurated a panel of seven who will be going round to receive memorandum and suggestions on how to do it. We are creating 12 more local government areas and we are going to make sure they do a good job. Seven months to the end of your tenure, stakeholders are worried that some of the projects in your campaign promises are yet to be delivered to the people.
