WHY WAR AGAINST OIL THEFT, ILLEGAL REFINERIES MAY FAIL---SAMIAMA Indications are rife that the fight against oil theft and illegal refineries in the Niger Delta region may continue to suffer setback as security personnel, community leaders, managers of oil companies, youths and powerful cabals have been fingered to be jointly involved in the illegal oil deal. Making the shocking revelation at a workshop organized by African Centre for Leadership, Strategy and Development in Asaba on Thursday, Coordinator of National Coalition on Gas Flaring and Oil Spills in the Niger Delta, Inemo Samiama, said the joint involvement of these individuals was a challenge to the federal and state governments in their bid to crush the brains behind oil theft in the South-South states. Samiama revealed that every effort being put by these individuals to end the menace was hypocritical as he proved that most security personnel and community leaders only cry out when youths fail to settle the agreement reached at the conception of the deal. He told participants at the workshop with the theme “Transparency and Accountability in the Oil and Gas Sector in Nigeria” that oil theft in the Niger Delta involved a vast network of individuals spread across several countries with catalogs of middlemen who make up a chain in the transportation of the oil to foreign countries.
