WILD HORSES of ASSATEAGUE ISLAND -- Every 2 months, or so, my wife and I head out in her Mini Cooper with no particular destination in mind. At and T intersection turn options we decide on taking a left or right...and if we cant figure it out we flip a coin. Today we ended up on Assateague Island, a barrier island off the coast of Maryland and Virginia...just below Ocean City, MD. We saw some wild horses, walked around on one of the beaches and took some nature walks on the island. Since the 1600s, wild ponies have roamed the beaches, pine forests, and salt marshes of Assateague. To avoid overgrazing, the ponies are rounded-up once a year, and some of the foals are sold at auction. The horses are cute, but definitely wild. The State Park warns visitors ahead of time that the horses DO kick, bite, and can carry rabies. They issue citations if anyone is caught touching, or feeding any of them. We were issued no citations. Whew! I tried to be on my best behavior. Ha. Here are some of the photos we took today...
