WILMA, DOG RA, AND THE MAYAN SUBURBS I spoke of this little - TopicsExpress

WILMA, DOG RA, AND THE MAYAN SUBURBS I spoke of this little adventure of ours in Episode One of the podcast. It was October 2005 and we were in Tampa boarding the cruise ship, aptly enough, named Miracle. And about thirty of us were going on the Mayan Ascension Cruise. I was sitting at the side of giant embarking auditorium watching the line of a couple thousand slowly progress back and forth along the rope lines and wondering if any of us were even going anywhere. Why? Because down along the southern coast of Central America there was churning up to speed, what would become the strongest hurricane ever recorded in the Atlantic basin. Her name was Wilma. Katrina, her tiny little sister, who had shown up a couple months earlier, got all the pub. But Wilma was truly something else. And the trip cancellation phone call never came, so here we were. We loaded up onto the ship and took off, and loaded up again on sweet free libations afforded on departure. Still weary of Wilma. And though the ship took a long sweeping northern path to keep out of reach, that first night was just a bit crazy. A vessel that size tossed around in such a manner one couldnt help wonder if it was going over on its side, while simultaneously amazed that this ship actually left port. Couple of days later, at night, Wilma had moved on to mess with others and we came to our first destination. But we did not stop. We were to go to Chichen Itza from Cozumel or maybe Cancun. But now our ship hauntingly passed the Yucatan peninsula only a few hundred yards off shore…. party central, and it was not emitting light. None. Wilma had hit head on. Chichen Itza was one of the Mayans major societal hubs. We now diverted southward and landed in the relatively unharmed Belize. Altun Ha was our new destination. We took a small boat up the Belize River marveling at the bamboo chicken (iguana) hanging in the trees and the crocs motivating along - pretty close. Then down the Old Nothern Highway passing miles of abandoned half finished buildings by the side of the road in a bus that stopped for nothing. Altun Ha must of been a bit of an outpost back in the day. A little off the main trail. The distant southern settlement to Chichen Itzas New York. How did those Itzaites deal with these yokels? When we disembarked we were greeted by our guides, one of which became the Dog Ra. He stayed with us the entire visit, though he was not being showered with snacks. He wanted the experience. He is the Creator experiencing itself. (picture- Deb and I, David and the gang…and Dog Ra)
