WINTRY DAY ON THE WAY… FULL RUN DOWN SITUATION: A very cold - TopicsExpress

WINTRY DAY ON THE WAY… FULL RUN DOWN SITUATION: A very cold wintry blast hold the region firmly in its icy grip, with very cold conditions set to blast through, although some of us may escape the worst! Currently we have a heavy band moving inland with reports of wet snow in West Melton and sleet in Sheffield. Showers a moving in a more south to north direction which is surprising us a tad. We expect showers on and off throughout today with sleet, hail and snow to 200-300m on Banks Peninsula. This afternoon, it looks as if showers may become more frequent showers may return. South Canterbury: Expect cold winds keeping temperatures down to around 6-7deg. Showers are likely, although they will remain coastal. They may also be laced with hail and sleet. High: 6-7deg Rain amounts: 5-10mm (coastal), lesser amounts inland. Wind: Fresh/Strong from the SW Inland Mid-Canterbury: Cold winds once again will drop highs to a cold 6deg.Showers possibly moving through, laced with hails, sleet and possibly wet snow this morning. High: 6deg Rain amounts: 5-10mm Wind: Fresh from the SW. Christchurch: Showers are likely throughout the day. Strong gusty SW winds will keep it cold with hail, sleet and snow above 200m on the Port Hills. High: 6deg Rain amounts: 10-15mm Wind: Strong from the SW. Banks Peninsula: You look in firing line for most of the activity. Expect frequent showers falling as snow above 300m. 15cm could accumulate above 500m. SW winds will rise to gale force at high altitudes. Anyone traveling the roads that go above these altitude are advised to be weary. These include the Summit Road, and the Christchurch Akaroa Road. High: 5deg, much lower temps as you get higher up of course. Rain amounts: 15-25mm, snow above 300m Wind: Gale force SW Inland North Canterbury: Cold SW winds with patchy cloud, it should remain mostly clear however due to the SW flow. In saying that, we can’t rule out a rogue shower making it through. High: 6deg Rain amounts: 5-10mm Wind: Fresh from the SW. Coastal North Canterbury (Kaikoura): Cold SW winds with less frequent coastal showers. Falling as snow to 400m. Hail possible in town if a heavy shower comes through. High: 7deg Rain amounts: 3-7mm Wind: Fresh/Strong from the SW. There we go, the full run down. I will be back around midday with any developments… some more frequent showers are more likely this afternoon. –Josh
