WOMAN CONVICTED of Animal Cruelty #animalcruelty A woman who failed to provide care, food and treatment to an emaciated chestnut mare has been convicted of animal cruelty and ordered to pay $3500 in fines and fees. Crystal Elaine Knee, of Sawyers Gully, failed to appear in Cessnock Local Court last Wednesday to answer to two charges of animal cruelty against the mare. Ms. Knee was convicted ex-parte, fined and custody of the horse awarded to RSPCA NSW. She was charged with failure to provide proper and sufficient food to the mare and failure to provide veterinary treatment to the horse. Ms. Knee was fined $1000 and ordered to pay $2536.32 in vet/boarding fees. The charges stem from an RSPCA investigation on March 22, when inspectors were called to a property in Sawyers Gully in relation to a complaint about a horse. Inspectors found a chestnut mare in very poor body condition. The mare’s ribs and hips were clearly visible and there was muscle wastage also noted over the hips. The mare was seized for immediate veterinary treatment. Further examination, by RSPCA veterinarians, found the horse to have a body condition score of 0/5 (0 is very poor while 5 is obese). Blood tests confirmed mild anaemia and faecal tests revealed the mare also had intestinal worms. The horse will be available for adoption at the RSPCA Hunter Shelter at Rutherford following a 28-day appeal period. cessnockadvertiser.au/story/1549164/woman-convicted-of-animal-cruelty/
