WORDS FROM INDIA VOLUNTEER RODRIGO: Today I crossed off the first item on my bucket list! Ravi woke me up at 4:30 this morning so that I could shower and dress before visiting the world’s most romantic grave, “The Tear Drop on the Cheek of Time”, The Taj Mahal. Its almost perfect balance, immovable white marble walls, curvaceous domes, mysterious inscriptions, and bronze jewelry beg that such a site be shared with some one very special. Lucky for me, I got to share it with not one but with sixteen special people. It’s still hard for me to believe that I only met them seven days ago. For the past week I have had the joy of working along side some of the sweetest most selfless people I’ve known, though they would not tell you that themselves. Not because they don’t believe that they may be, but because they would rather think of others first. When this team of IMR volunteers signed up for a medical trip to India they rejected safe roads, clean water, predominantly sterile living conditions, and a life of ignorance. No longer would these people view life with eyes that look away from the deep pain that millions of people experience everyday around the world. Instead, recognizing our depravity and selfish predispositions, we spent the past few days doing our best to help some of the sickest people in the world, in one of the poorest countries in the world, all the while realizing that it was our patients that were bring the more lasting healing to our lives. This week I did not see one of the wonders of the world; I saw hundreds when looking in the eyes of those who attended our clinics. My team members, now my friends, will tell you that there is truly nothing more worth while than helping someone who needs it. In a few hours we will be on a plane back to the U.S. knowing that so many are still in need, but we leave with a better understanding of the kinds lives we desire to live: lives not of complacency and comfort, but of empathy and sacrifice for the well being of others. ~Rodrigo
