WORLD FOOD DAY. for more follow me on FB@weremwandishi People around the world marked World Foods Day yesterday. In Africa we were also riding on their back singing praises to what we think should be commemorated on the day to celebrate what we have in our galleries despite having nothing to show off for. In Africa we were having blind celebrations. We were doing it just because it is marked as an international day that ought to be celebrated. Yearly we mark this day with blind polices that cannot increase our food security as a continent. In Kenya the situation is even worse. The political rhetoric has deemed impossible to cultivate the culture of having ample food for its inhabitants. Insecurity, corruption, famine, disease and tribalism has deemed difficult for the state to curb food insecurity. Despite all these challenges facing food security, corruption seems to take the center stage as far as food security is concerned. Corruption can be termed as the abuse of entrusted power for private gain, in public or private sector. Corruption as crime against pillars of social justice such as democracy, education, public health and justice can be said to have come handy to fuel luck of enough food for Kenyans. Taking in mind that 40% of Kenyans are food insecure, in regions like northern, north eastern, coastal and south central, the case is even worse taking into account that these are some of the regions that facing social injustice the most. Mismanagement of funds meant for irrigation as well as other faming activities is a loss to the fight against food insecurity. Poor management of the agricultural sector as well as mismanagement of policies all come in to explain why Kenya is still facing starvation as it helps other nations rejoice in their yields. On this day, we should not be dressed hurrying to grace the occasion in stadiums, but rather we ought to have sat down, reviewed our food security polices and calculated on how to hit the mark before we readily bounce back in jubilation, cheering as others suffer of hunger. This ought to have been the day where we visit farmers with credits and education on better farming techniques. It is an ideal day to tell our brothers from Nyanza that the river can as well be used for large scale irrigation purposes. This should be the day to let known to our friends in Meru county that when the western countries burn the export of miraa, we can turn to horticulture and other household foodstuffs to supplement what we have at the national gallery instead of making noise. Instead of having a sight of the situation tomorrow, our leaders have turned a blind sight on us. They don’t need us to be food secure so as they can have us in numbers during their political showdowns. They see no need to have a feeding nation so that we can sing praises for them when facing challenges or attacked by an opponent. They love us when we are hungry in order to die for them when need be. Policy makers have also flinched for fear of looking contradictory to their masters. They make polices to serve interest of their commanding authority. The government on the other hand has embarked on false promises as a stage show. They want to maintain the status cue to curb any empowerment that might come our way. That is way they hinder our access to land. That is why they pocket funds for agricultural projects and that is the sole reason why they dance before our very nose, mocking us insulting us and we, unwillingly join them in these cockroach dances. It is time we really absorb the real meaning of this important day. It is time we observe this day meaningfully and it is time to only give credit where it is due. Those leaders that run left and right advocating for freedom and rights ought to be told, as Franklin Roosevelt once said that True individual freedom cannot exist without economic security and independence and People who are hungry and out of a job are the stuff of which dictatorships are made.
