WORLD WAR II: 70th Anniversary of Operation Market Garden 17 September 1944 General Montgomery planned and successfully advocated for a major airborne invasion of the Netherlands, in order to cut of German supply lines and to shorten the route in to Germany. The highly complex Operation began well but was ultimately not successful as a result among other factors of the powerful German counteroffensive.
