WORSHIP SONG for FRIDAY – The mad rush to Christmas is definitely on and it seems to come earlier and progress faster every year. There are so many conflicting emotions, thoughts, concepts and ideas about Christmas! It’s a time of sadness and depression for some, for many reasons and at the same time, some celebrate with wild abandon. People over spend, over eat, over indulge, over decorate, over compensate and even over dress – sometime all done to impress people we really don’t like and who really don’t care. We have our “do to” lists, our “wish list” and our “I really don’t want to do this list!” Busy, busy and more busy seems to be the modus operandi of the average American during Christmas in 2014. Even those of us who are Followers of Jesus can get caught up in so many things. They are not necessarily wrong or evil but some are off point when it comes to the real definition of Christmas. We spend God’s resources on loan to us without much regard for His will and we sometimes fight battles that I don’t really think HE cares about. Santa Claus, Merry Christmas, Season’s Greetings, Happy Holidays, the “war” on Christmas with the banning of the most benign aspects of the day showcasing the ridiculous nature of political correctness. Does it really matter whether a store clerk say’s “Happy Holidays” or “Season’s Greetings” or whatever or whether a store has more secular items than religious ones on their shelves? In the day of pluralistic ethnicities, religions and consumeristic materialism being the real god of most people, do these things surprise us and should they matter? People can say “MERRY CHRISTMAS” and have no clue what the meaning of this “holy-day” really is unless someone tells them the message of the story. Does it matter if you let your kid believe in Santa or not and does it really matter how a particular tradition is played out in another person’s life? WHAT IS CHRISTMAS? As Christians we’re sometimes so busy being consumers and so busy fighting battles and desiring to correct that which only God can correct that we miss out on the true blessings of the season. It’s not about presents, decorations, music, family dinners or traditions – these things can be blessings but Christmas is about CHRIST! HE really is the reason for the season. Nothing profound there but I have to admit that I don’t always live in that reality. Every year I say that I will but somehow this season pulls me away from it. Strange that the “season” of CHRISTmas can pull us away from CHRIST! If we’re going to fight battles, that’s the one to fight! Fight the war on CHRISTmas that takes place in the human heart, starting with our own. Maybe then, the JOY that wells up and overflows in our lives will impress the world so that instead of us correcting them they become seekers asking us why we’re so happy! Today’s song says, “This Is Christmas” and I hope that it speaks to your heart as it does mine.
