Related article: nwemail.co.uk/news/court-passes-death-sentence-on-barrow-pitbull-1.1081583 Jordan Riglar’s pitbull terrier Kugo was sentenced to death by a district judge in Furness Magistrates’ Court on Thursday. Now Mr Riglar says he will launch a legal challenge in a bid to save his dog from death row and his solicitors are working on the appeal. Kugo had been staying with Mr Riglar’s friends when he escaped and police found him in the street. However, because pitbulls are classed as fighting dogs, they are a restricted breed and as a result Kugo was seized by police who have held him for three months, running up an £800 kennel bill. Mr Riglar said: “I’ve had Kugo since he was six weeks old – he’s coming up two years now. “He’s a family dog and this feels like they have taken one of my kids away. “They’ve told me I am unfit to own a dog, but I have done everything I can to prove to them that my dog is not vicious or a danger to the public. “If I get him back there are £800 kennel fees, I’d have to get him chipped and muzzled – if I was that irresponsible I wouldn’t be willing to do it, I’d just leave it, but I love dogs.” Kugo was bought as a Christmas present for Mr Riglar’s son, Cory, who is oblivious to the drama surrounding his pet. He added: “He’s part of the family, he has been all over with us. They’ve put him on death row. I was expecting to be told I could have him back and muzzle him. “I’ve had dogs all my life and I’ve never had a problem.” He added: “I’ve not been allowed to see him or even be told how he is.” Mr Riglar was banned from owning a dog for five years and district judge Mr Gerald Chalk ordered the destruction of Kugo. nwemail.co.uk/news/barrow-pitbull-owner-in-bid-to-save-dog-on-death-row-1.1081913
