She thinks it is silly that girls in her culture are allowed to do so little. She wants to listen to pop music, wear All Stars sneakers and cycle on the street like her friend Abdullah does. When she wants a beautiful green bike, she mother is opposed to the idea. What would the community think? Besides, cycling’s not for girls. Wadjda doesn’t give up. She decides to save up the money she needs. He mother, distracted by her husband’s wish to take a second wife, is barely aware of her daughter’s sometimes bizarre plans to earn money. In many ways, Wadjda is a special film. It is the first feature-length film to be filmed entirely in Saudi Arabia and the director is female; this is a country in which women aren’t even allowed to drive a car. This is a subtle, feel-good drama. At various international film festivals it stole the public’s heart and was heaped with prizes. The film also offers an insight into an otherwise closed community and deals with universal themes such as hope, courage and perseverance. (RvB)
