Walk down a city street, and imagine that youve no one left in the world. That youve alienated or lost your friends and family, and that youre alone. Imagine theres no money in your pockets or in some bank account. Theres no house to go back to. Just you and the street. No cell phone to search the web or send an e-mail or apply for a job. Nowhere to keep food from spoiling or to keep any at all. Just the clothes on your back and the shoes on your feet. Soon theyll begin to smell like sweat and like the street. Soon theyll be ragged. Eventually, the winterll come back and youll have to beg. Eventually, the food in a dumpster. The food someone else threw away. Someone else wasted. Eventually, thatll be all you have to eat. Youll beg so that you wont have to eat anothers garbage, but theyll despise you for it. Theyll tell you to get a job. Theyll threaten you. Theyll have you arrested for digging for food in the trash, and to stop you from doing it theyll start to pour ammonia over it.That wont stop you from being hungry, but that will stop you from eating it. Youll have to go somewhere else. Youll sleep in ditches, and under bypasses. Youll find others like you dead, frozen, and rotten. Youll wish you were them, and youll contemplate dying. After awhile youll talk to yourself because theres no one else to talk to. The cops will come again, and theyll arrest you, and in jail you might have a decent place to sleep and a meal to eat, but after awhile theyll realize that they dont have enough room to keep you and theyll set you free on the outskirts of another place. Youll start over. Youll walk into the pain in the soles of your feet and the rashes on your thighs. Youll know when the end is coming, that it was here all along, and youll understand that upright standing citizens are really just customers working to pay society to have it held off of them.
